Where were you when Apollo Flew to the moon?

Where were you when Apollo flew to the moon and landed for the first time on July 20, 1969? I can remember exactly where I was and whom I was with.

I had just returned to Germany after 60 days of TDY (temporary Duty) to Eastern Turkey where there were troubles and and the Turkish forces needed airlift capacity. A group of air crewmen and aircraft from mostly from VII Corp in Germany were tasked with providing rides to Turkish and allied troops. It was an intense 60 days. We lost aircraft and crew to hostile fire.

I was back in Germany about a week and was walking down the street in a small town with my friend Fish. As we strolled down the street a German housewife ran out of her house saying loudly, “Come here!” in German.

We entered her home and were shown into her living room where her entire family was seated around a television. The moon landing was about to take place. It was amazing to watch. It was even more amazing to watch from the home of complete strangers who had invited us because they saw us walking down street in our Army uniforms.

We watched the landing and heard the famous words, “One step for a man…” the family insisted that we join them for snacks and stay for conversation. as the day passed we thought perhaps we were staying too long and our hosts were just polite about saying anything. We were apparently mistaken as the family insisted we stay for a wonderful dinner prepared in traditional German style and share a large amount of liquid refreshments of various flavors and potency.

When the time to leave actually arrived we left as lifelong friends. It is a memory I treasure. My friend and I as well as our other comrades on TDY were not aware that the spacecraft had been launched or that the landing was about to occur.

We were treated with kindness, love and generosity by people we did not know simply because we were American soldiers and they wanted to share the moment with my friend and I. Where ever they are today I send them love.

An Afternoon at The Country Bumpkin

We spend an afternoon at the country Bumpkin with Bill, Cheryl and Will Cox as they accompanied the Oblong Illinois Cub Scout Pack on an outing for Halloween. A good time was had by all. Thanks for inviting us Bill, Cheryl and Will!

While being detained by a group of people in Mindanao in 2001 “Osama Bin Gene” irritates his captors by putting a towel around his head and pretending to be one of their fearless leaders. They did not appear to be as amused.

After three days his hosts decided to release him.

I think I would enjoy living here but the road would be problematic in a snow or ice storm.

I wish I knew where this estate was located. I merely saw the picture without any other information and it looks unique.

Nissan March new auto $3600

I have just returned from auto shopping I discovered a Nissan March for 165,000 Philippine Peso, which at the current rate of exchange is $3622.00 U.S. Dollars.

This price is for a four door hatch back with 1.0 liter motor, auto transmission, stereo, air conditioner, Tax, Title and one year of full coverage included in the price.

I can not find anything similar in the U.S. for less than $13,000.00. This car is manufactured in Taiwan, Republic of China, and Philippines. It is roomy inside for a subcompact car. The fuel economy is 38 miles per gallon as equipped.

Detroit is in big trouble unless they rapidly embrace cheaper cars while retaining the making quality as good as the better imports to the American market.

It is truly a world class value!

LPG Tanker accident in Mindanao

My friend and Sister in Law Dexie Ortega snapped these photos of a liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) truck that had a severe accident on the road near the Del monte Plantation.

The accident looks bad and it is bad. The great news is that the truck was empty. The resources of the emergency people here are almost non existent. The level of response would be similar to a small volunteer fire department in the US forty years ago. When things go bad here n the Philippines they often go spectacularly bad due to the lack of training and materials.

Dave Wilson on vacation at a water fall on Camiguin Island. He has the self assured demeanor of someone safe in his world and content with life. Donâ€™t worry son that will probably change, but I hope not soon and I hope not for very long when it changes. I love you and I always will love you.

Camiguin Island is known as the Island Born of Fire. It has several active volcanos and some have erupted with great devastation and loss of life in recent times. It is a beautiful place and I hope the Wilson Family will have another opportunity to visit there.
